Biniam Omar, used to live in the African state that is known for its human rights abuses, forcing hundreds of thousands of Eritreans to flee in search for a better life.

But the 38-year-old said he is now frightened to open his door after he fell victim to a burglary, losing all his possessions at the Griffith John Street tower block where he currently lives.

He told The Sun: ‘I feel frightened to open the door. There are many people drunk and taking drugs.

‘They knock on the door in the middle of the night. Nobody told me what it was like before I came here – if they had I wouldn’t have come.

‘Whenever you open the door here there is a risk. People in Eritrea are nice and hard working – the only problem is the politics.’ read more
