Human Rights Situation in Eritrea Remains Dire and the Authorities Choose to Maintain Practices which Perpetuate the Crisis, Special Rapporteur Tells Human Rights Council
The Human Rights Council this morning started an interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Eritrea. The Council also concluded the interactive dialogue with the High Commissioner for Human Rights on his global update.
Mohamed Abdelsalam Babiker, Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Eritrea, said the human rights situation in Eritrea remained dire. Patterns of gross human rights violations, including the widespread use of arbitrary and incommunicado detention and enforced disappearance, persisted unabated. The authorities continued to enforce a system of indefinite national service that amounted to forced labour and had been consistently linked to torture and inhuman or degrading treatment. readmore
